Decades after the initial infection, a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to residual bacterial antigens causes massive, localized tissue destruction. These destructive, rubbery lesions can form in virtually any organ, including the skin, liver, and bones. Their presence signifies the devastating, destructive tertiary phase of the untreated infection.
