Clinical Details
Often occurring in tandem with anosmia, the virus triggers profound local inflammation that impairs the function of taste buds. The ACE2 receptors are heavily expressed on the tongue, making the oral cavity a direct target for viral entry. Patients find themselves completely unable to detect sweet, salty, or bitter flavors.
