The sudden and complete loss of the sense of smell.
Clinical Details
The virus directly attacks and damages the sustentacular support cells in the olfactory epithelium located high inside the nasal cavity. This disrupts the function of the olfactory neurons, preventing scent signals from reaching the brain entirely. It is a highly specific neurological marker of this particular viral infection.
