Clinical Details
The virus highly replicates in the tonsils and surrounding throat tissues, causing massive local necrosis and inflammation. This results in heavily swollen tonsils covered in thick, white, purulent exudate that makes swallowing agonizing. The severe sore throat is typically the primary reason infected teenagers seek medical care.
