Clinical Details

The virus invades the central nervous system and selectively destroys the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord. Because these specific motor neurons can no longer send signals to the muscles, the affected limbs become completely floppy and lifeless. This profound structural damage to the nervous system is irreversible.
