The virus specifically targets synovial cells and macrophages within the joint capsules, triggering an intense, localized immune response. This leads to profound joint swelling, stiffness, and agonizing pain that makes standing or walking incredibly difficult. The wrists, ankles, and smaller joints of the hands and feet are most frequently affected.
