Bony projections that develop along the edges of bones within a joint.
Clinical Details
In a futile attempt to repair the damaged cartilage, the body stimulates new bone growth around the joint margins. These hard, sharp lumps, known as osteophytes, create mechanical blocks that restrict movement and pinch nearby tissues. They can often be felt as hard lumps under the skin.
