Definition
Abnormal redness of the skin over the affected joint.
Clinical Details
The rapid immune response to the urate crystals causes blood vessels around the joint to dilate dramatically. This rush of blood to the area makes the overlying skin appear bright red, shiny, and swollen. The joint also feels noticeably hot to the touch.
