Definition

A persistent throbbing pain in the head upon waking up.

Clinical Details

The repeated pauses in breathing cause oxygen levels in the blood to drop and carbon dioxide levels to spike. High carbon dioxide acts as a vasodilator, expanding the blood vessels in the brain. This vascular expansion creates pressure in the skull, manifesting as a headache upon waking.
