Definition

The abnormal accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity.

Clinical Details

Cirrhosis causes high blood pressure in the portal vein, which forces fluid to leak out of the liver and intestines. Concurrently, the failing liver stops producing albumin, a protein that keeps fluid inside blood vessels. This combination results in massive, uncomfortable swelling of the abdomen.
