Definition
The death of flesh and skin due to lack of blood flow.
Clinical Details
Because the crushing force obliterates the capillary networks feeding the skin and muscle, portions of the hand may begin to die. The skin may initially look pale or blue and eventually turn dark purple or black as the tissue becomes necrotic. Severe crush injuries carry a high risk of permanent muscle loss or partial amputation.
