Definition

Severe discomfort when moving the jaw.

Clinical Details

The main chewing muscle (masseter) attaches directly to the cheekbone. When the bone is broken, attempting to open the mouth or chew food violently pulls on the fractured bone fragments, causing excruciating pain. In severe inward fractures, the broken bone may physically block the lower jaw from opening fully.
