Definition

A palpable indentation or structural defect in the muscle.

Clinical Details

In a severe or complete tear, a physical gap or divot may be felt or seen in the calf where the muscle belly has ripped and retracted upward. This area will be surrounded by intense swelling and eventual deep bruising that pools down toward the ankle. The remaining intact muscle often spasms tightly into a hard knot.
