The patient experiences a sharp, agonizing pain directly over the fractured bone that radiates throughout the joint. The pain is severe enough to prevent normal walking and spikes dramatically if the foot is moved or twisted. Palpating the bony prominences of the ankle elicits a sharp, guarding response.
