Definition
An injury to muscle tissue accompanied by skin discoloration from ruptured blood vessels.
Clinical Details
Extensive, dark bruising develops rapidly as the fractured bones and torn surrounding ligaments hemorrhage into the soft tissue of the foot and lower leg. The ankle, heel, and toes may turn deep purple or black within a day of the injury. This pooling of blood is accompanied by massive, tight swelling around the joint.
