Definition

The total loss of the capacity to bear weight on the legs.

Clinical Details

Because the pelvis is the central load-bearing structure transferring weight from the spine to the legs, a fracture destroys this mechanical integrity. The patient is completely unable to stand or walk. The legs may also exhibit weakness or a tingling sensation due to associated nerve damage.
