Paralysis
Type: Symptom
Definition
The loss of the ability to move in part or most of the body.
Clinical Details
Paralysis occurs below the level of the injury because the neural pathways responsible for transmitting motor commands from the brain to the muscles are severed or severely crushed. Injuries high in the neck can cause tetraplegia affecting all four limbs, while injuries in the lower back cause paraplegia affecting the legs. This loss of voluntary muscle control is often permanent.
