Definition
The mechanical inability to fully straighten the knee.
Clinical Details
When a fragment of the torn cartilage breaks loose and becomes physically wedged in the hinge mechanism of the knee joint, it creates a mechanical block. The patient will experience a terrifying sensation where the knee 'catches' or completely locks up, preventing them from extending their leg. The joint must often be manipulated manually to dislodge the fragment.
