Definition
The parting or gaping of skin and underlying flesh.
Clinical Details
Unlike a scrape, a laceration results in a distinct physical gap where the edges of the skin are pulled apart by natural skin tension. Inside this gaping wound, underlying structures such as yellow subcutaneous fat or red muscle tissue may be visible. Sutures or medical adhesives are usually required to pull the edges back together for proper healing.
