Rapid fluid accumulation in the knee joint.
Clinical Details
Significant swelling, known as hemarthrosis, typically occurs within a few hours of the injury as blood vessels within the torn ligament hemorrhage directly into the joint space. The knee becomes tight, hot, and visibly enlarged. This rapid internal bleeding restricts the joint's ability to bend.
