Definition

Inability or discomfort when moving the neck.

Clinical Details

Neck stiffness develops as the damaged muscles tighten and spasm in a protective guarding mechanism to prevent further injury. This significantly reduces the patient's range of motion, making it difficult to turn the head side to side or look up and down. The stiffness is often worse the morning after the initial trauma.
