The degeneration or death of the optic nerve fibers.
Clinical Details
The toxic accumulation of lipids destroys the myelin sheath encasing the optic nerve, cutting off visual information from the eyes to the brain. This rapid neural decay leads to progressive and ultimately total blindness.
