An opening or split in the roof of the mouth that occurs when the tissue doesn't fuse together during development in the womb.
Clinical Details
The disruption of facial and pharyngeal development prevents the plates of the skull that form the hard palate from joining completely. This creates a physical gap that drastically complicates infant feeding and later speech development.
