Respiratory Failure
Type: Symptom
Definition
A condition in which the blood doesn't have enough oxygen or has too much carbon dioxide.
Clinical Details
The toxic buildup of glycogen heavily damages the diaphragm and other intercostal muscles necessary for breathing. As these muscles weaken, the patient's ability to inhale deeply diminishes, eventually requiring mechanical ventilation to survive.
