Definition

An extreme and persistent dryness of the skin.

Clinical Details

Because the underlying nutritional deficiencies severely compromise the skin's protective lipid barrier, the epidermis can no longer retain necessary moisture. The skin across the entire body becomes deeply dehydrated, tight, and highly inflexible. This profound dryness exacerbates the formation of the hyperkeratotic papules.
