Definition

A condition where the skin lacks appropriate moisture, becoming rough and flaky.

Clinical Details

Omega-3 fatty acids are integral structural components of the epidermal lipid matrix, which seals in moisture and keeps the skin barrier intact. Without adequate integration of these flexible fats, the skin's barrier function is compromised, leading to massive transepidermal water loss. The resulting skin is chronically dry, rough, and unusually prone to irritation.
