Definition

A neurological disorder characterized by an uncontrollable, agonizing urge to move the legs.

Clinical Details

Low iron stores directly impair the function of dopamine receptors in the basal ganglia, the region of the brain responsible for smooth motor control. This localized dysfunction creates an intensely uncomfortable, creeping sensation in the lower legs that is temporarily relieved only by movement. It strikes most often at night, severely disrupting sleep architecture.
