Loss of Proprioception
Type: Symptom
Definition
The inability to sense the position and movement of the body's joints in space.
Clinical Details
The posterior columns of the spinal cord specifically carry sensory information regarding vibration and joint position up to the brain. Their destruction eliminates the patient's physical awareness of where their feet are without looking at them. This leads to a heavy, stomping gait and frequent falls, especially in the dark.
