Definition

The breakdown and destruction of skeletal muscle tissue.

Clinical Details

Choline is absolutely essential for maintaining the structural integrity of muscle cell membranes. A deficiency compromises these membranes, causing the cells to leak enzymes like creatine phosphokinase (CPK) into the bloodstream and eventually undergo apoptosis. Patients experience significant muscle aching and weakness as the tissue physically degrades.
