A broad term for any disease or dysfunction of the brain, causing altered mental status.
Clinical Details
The brain relies heavily on a continuous, high-volume supply of ATP to maintain consciousness and neurological function. As cellular energy levels plummet due to lack of phosphate, central nervous system function broadly deteriorates. Patients progress rapidly from irritability and confusion to delirium, seizures, and potentially a coma.
