Clinical Details
Copper is necessary for the function of cytochrome c oxidase, crucial for maintaining the myelin sheaths of the central nervous system. Its deficiency causes progressive degeneration of the spinal cord's posterior columns, severely mimicking subacute combined degeneration. Patients experience a spastic, unsteady gait and significant sensory loss in the lower limbs.
