Because biotin is crucial for lipid metabolism and the production of healthy skin fats, deficiency compromises the skin's barrier function. A distinctive scaly, red dermatitis develops, typically localizing around the eyes, nose, mouth, and perineal area. This rash is often highly prone to secondary fungal infections.
