Severe Weakness
Type: Symptom
Definition
A profound lack of physical strength and energy.
Clinical Details
Because skeletal muscles rely on potassium gradients to initiate and sustain contractions, a deficiency makes it physically difficult for muscle fibers to fire. This generalized weakness typically begins in the lower extremities and progresses upward. In severe cases, it can paralyze the respiratory muscles, becoming a medical emergency.
