Definition
A buildup of keratin debris located superficially in the conjunctiva.
Clinical Details
These are raised, foamy, silvery-grey patches that form on the white of the eye (the conjunctiva). They are accumulations of desquamated keratinized epithelial cells and represent a physical manifestation of severe xerophthalmia. Their presence is almost exclusively diagnostic of systemic vitamin A deficiency.
