Definition
A condition where normal bone is replaced by soft, fibrous tissue in multiple locations.
Clinical Details
The overactive cellular signaling severely disrupts normal bone-building osteoblasts. Instead of forming hard, solid bone, the cells produce soft, weak, fibrous scar tissue that expands within the bone marrow cavity. This causes the bones to swell, deform, become extremely painful, and fracture easily under normal weight-bearing stress.
