Definition
The abnormal deposition of solid calcium salts just beneath the skin.
Clinical Details
The chronically high levels of phosphorus in the blood, combined with the metabolic derangements of the disease, cause calcium-phosphate complexes to precipitate out of the bloodstream. These hard, rock-like deposits form in the soft tissues under the skin. They can be felt as small, firm nodules and can sometimes limit joint mobility.
