An abnormally low level of calcium in the blood.
Clinical Details
Because the kidneys and bones ignore the PTH signal, they do not retain calcium or release it into the bloodstream, respectively. The blood calcium levels drop significantly. This can cause the peripheral nerves to become hyper-excitable, leading to tingling sensations, muscle cramps, and severe tetany (involuntary spasms).
