Definition

A metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels.

Clinical Details

The vast excess of somatostatin completely paralyzes the beta cells of the pancreas, preventing them from releasing insulin in response to meals. Without insulin to shuttle glucose into tissues, sugar rapidly builds up in the bloodstream. This causes a secondary, usually mild form of diabetes that presents with typical symptoms of thirst and frequent urination.
