Definition

A dramatic, intense darkening of the skin and mucous membranes.

Clinical Details

The rapidly growing pituitary tumor churns out vast, unregulated quantities of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). A byproduct of ACTH production is melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH). The massive levels of MSH aggressively overstimulate pigment cells, causing the patient's skin to turn a deep, dark bronze or brown color, particularly in scars and skin folds.
