Neuroglycopenia
Type: Symptom
Definition
A shortage of glucose specifically in the brain, causing neurological dysfunction.
Clinical Details
The brain relies almost exclusively on a continuous supply of glucose from the bloodstream to function. When insulin-driven hypoglycemia starves the brain of its energy source, the central nervous system falters. Patients experience confusion, bizarre behavioral changes, visual disturbances, and if untreated, seizures and coma.
