Definition

An abnormal and persistent desire to drink fluids.

Clinical Details

The excessive loss of fluid through frequent, sugar-rich urination leads to mild systemic dehydration. The brain's osmoreceptors detect this drop in fluid volume and trigger a strong thirst response to encourage water intake. Pregnant women may feel they cannot drink enough to quench their thirst.
