Definition

An overwhelming, unquenchable thirst.

Clinical Details

To prevent lethal dehydration from the massive urinary fluid loss, the brain's thirst centers are continuously and aggressively stimulated. Patients experience an intense, constant craving for fluids, specifically ice-cold water. This thirst often awakens them multiple times throughout the night (nocturia).
