Definition
An optical illusion of a hole in the macula caused by the contraction of surrounding scar tissue.
Clinical Details
The shrinking epiretinal membrane can drag the edges of the fovea (the very center of the macula) outward, creating a steep, crater-like appearance. While not a true hole in the retina, it severely impacts reading vision.
