Definition
Primarily used for lowering inflammation and treating lower back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis. In Southern Africa, it has historically been used for fevers, indigestion, and as a tonic. Contains iridoid glycosides, particularly harpagoside, which are responsible for its medicinal effects. May cause diarrhea, nausea, headaches, and stomach upsets. It should not be used with blood thinners like warfarin.
