Description
Corynebacterium diphtheriae secretes a potent exotoxin that rapidly destroys healthy tissues in the upper respiratory tract. It primarily strikes unvaccinated populations living in crowded conditions, spreading easily through respiratory droplets. The systemic absorption of this toxin can eventually cause lethal damage to the heart muscle and peripheral nerves.
