Description
A traumatic pneumothorax occurs when a physical injury, such as a broken rib, stab wound, or gunshot, tears the membrane covering the lung. This allows air to leak out of the lung and become trapped in the pleural space of the chest cavity. The increasing pressure of the trapped air crushes the underlying lung tissue, preventing it from expanding.
