Sickle Cell Disease (CLINICAL)
Description
Caused by a mutation in the hemoglobin-beta gene, this condition makes red blood cells take on a C-shape like a farm tool called a sickle. These malformed cells die early causing a constant shortage of red blood cells, and they can get stuck in small blood vessels. It most commonly affects people of African, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern descent.
