Nutritional Optic Neuropathy (CLINICAL)

Description

The optic nerve is highly metabolically active and uniquely vulnerable to energy failure caused by deficiencies in vital B vitamins (like B12, B1, and folate) or trace minerals like copper. Often heavily exacerbated by the concurrent oxidative stress of tobacco or alcohol use, the localized energy deficit selectively destroys the papillomacular bundle within the nerve. If the specific nutritional deficit is not quickly corrected, the nerve fibers permanently atrophy, causing severe central vision loss.
