Description
Vascular dementia occurs when blood vessels in the brain are damaged, often due to strokes or chronic small vessel disease, depriving brain cells of vital oxygen and nutrients. This neurodegenerative decline can happen suddenly following a major stroke or gradually over time as multiple minor infarctions accumulate. It commonly affects individuals over 65 who have a history of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or diabetes.
