Description
Stereotyped movement disorder presents in early childhood with persistent, rhythmic motor behaviors that significantly interfere with daily activities or result in self-injury. The exact etiology is unknown but involves dysregulation in the basal ganglia and dopaminergic pathways. Unlike tics, these movements are generally rhythmic, prolonged, and can sometimes be temporarily suppressed with distraction.
